Eileen Gray studied design at the Slade School of Arts in London starting in 1898. It was here she learned the technique of making oriental lacquer. She is a perfect illustration of the transition between the individual craftsman-made furniture of the early 20?s to the purposefully functional architecture and furniture of the Modern Movement.
